Illinois School SLP Continuing Education Requirements

This post is for my fellow Illinois school-based speech-language pathologists!

It can be quite complicated to keep up with all of the different continuing education requirements for ISBE, IDFPR, and ASHA, especially when none of the cycles seem to match up.  Plus, it seems with every few years, there are new requirements to keep track of!

I made some graphics to help remember what is required for each of the three major licenses – ASHA (optional), ISBE, and IDFPR.

(Do keep in mind that if you work in other settings than schools – particularly with adults – you will have some additional requirements for IDFPR.  Also, if you supervise assistants or students, you will need a one time two hour supervision course for ASHA.)

This information is up to date as of June 2024.

(Note: PDH stands for Professional Development Hour.  If you need more clarification on CEU vs. CMH vs. PDH, check out my blog post here.)

Specific Requirements:

ASHA CCC’s (optional)

  • 30 PDHs every 3 years
  • 3 year cycles vary
  • Note: CCC’s are optional for the state of Illinois; however, some employers may require them
  • Hours must include:
    • Ethics (1 Hour)
    • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (2 Hours)

IDFPR (required)

  • 20 PDHs every 2 years
  • All SLPs on same 2 year cycle; renews in October of odd numbered years
  • Hours must include:
    • Sexual Harassment (no set time)
    • Implicit Bias (1 hour)
    • Ethics (1 hour)

ISBE (required)

  • NON-Teaching License requires either proof of IDFPR license, ASHA CCC’s, OR 120 PDHs every 5 years
  • 5 year cycles vary
  • No requirements on topics for the hours.
  • Note: a small number of SLPs have the Teaching License – they MUST do the 120 PDHs every 5 years.
  • Entering proof of your IDFPR license or ASHA CCC’s can be confusing on ISBE’s site.  Follow the steps in the following graphic if needed.
