How you organize your data and attendance as a school SLP really depends on your personal preferences, but I always seem to go back to using a data binder!
This has looked different for my different positions – when I traveled between ten schools in a week, I had 2 or 3 binders, sorted by day of the week (ex: M/W/F and T/R).
When I had students in both the grade school and junior high buildings, I kept separate binders for the different buildings. Now that I’m in one building, I have one large 3″ binder each year that I keep on my desk.
I use binder dividers to sort by grade level, and then I put each student in alphabetically by grade. I use small post-it flags to separate each student’s section, and write their initials on it with permanent marker.
For each student, I keep:
- A yearly attendance page. {This is a free download that I update yearly.}
- Any progress monitoring record forms.
- Any self-rating scales we might complete.
- Any individual data sheets that I might use.
- Any relevant independent work samples (typically for older students with language goals).
I’ve tried several different systems (including digital ones), but this is what I keep coming back to – I find it very helpful to have everything available at a glance, particularly when I’m writing an IEP or progress report, or if the internet goes down at school.
Let me know if you use a similar system, and what works for you!
